Assigning A Task

With all the work that needs to get done, it's incumbent on managers to share the burden with their staff. Some managers are hesitant to do this, while others struggle with its implementation. Here are some ideas about assigning a task.
The Benefits
When a manager assigns a task to an employee, the following advantages are experienced:
* The work is distributed more effectively
* The manager frees up some time
* The employee develops more skills
* The employee is further engaged
* The workforce has more capacity
* The manager has more flexibility
* The workload is better managed
Task Assignment
Many managers, though, are ill-trained in the practice of assigning a task. Here are the basic steps to assigning a task properly.
* Detail, to the appropriate level, the requirements of the task
* Explain the context of the task and its implications
* Clarify expectations
* Provide training to the employee, as required
* Establish deliverables, check-points, timelines, and follow-up
* Identify performance against the standard
* Highlight consequences
* Confirm understanding from the employee
* Demonstrate that you care about the outcome
* Review progress and provide additional support, as needed
This methodical approach is very effective and, over time, yields incredible returns. The elements that seem to cause the most difficulty for managers, however, are detailing the assignment and establishing confirmation from the employee. Practising these steps will improve your effectiveness at assigning tasks.
Following this approach will yield positive task assignments, along with a corresponding increase in performance and productivity. It's what you need to do to maximize your impact as a high-performing manager.
